Liam Payne died of “multiple trauma” with “internal and external hemorrhage,” according to the preliminary autopsy report conducted Wednesday by the Argentine forensic body investigating the case and obtained by the Buenos Aires City Police. The toxicology report is still pending.

The prosecutor in charge of the case is working on an official statement with more details. The British singer, a former member of the boy band One Direction, died at the age of 31 on Wednesday, after falling from the third floor of a hotel in the Argentine capital.

The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear. Buenos Aires police said they responded to the hotel Wednesday after receiving a 911 call about an aggressive man who was possibly under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Hotel staff had requested urgent police assistance shortly before Payne fell, according to a 911 call obtained by a CNN affiliate. The hotel manager said a guest was “overwhelmed by drugs and alcohol” and that staff did not know “if the guest’s life was in danger.” Photos of Payne’s hotel room, released by police, showed a smashed television.

“We are in contact with local authorities,” a spokesperson for the British Embassy in Argentina.
