Jannik Sinner beat Novak Djokovic 7-6 (4), 6-3 on Sunday to win the Shanghai Masters, giving the Italian his seventh title of the year.

A day after confirming that he will end 2024 as the world number one, Sinner defeated the 24-time Grand Slam champion in 1 hour and 31 minutes. He faced no break points as he totaled eight aces and 22 winners to Djokovic’s four and 12, respectively.

With Roger Federer and Carlos Alcaraz watching from the box, Sinner became the first player to win three Masters 1000 titles in a single season — the others were in Miami and Cincinnati — since Rafael Nadal did it in 2018.

He also became the first man to win more than six titles in a season since Andy Murray in 2016. He tied the head-to-head record with Djokovic at 4-4.

“Playing against Djokovic is one of the toughest challenges we have and I think I handled the circumstances perfectly,” Sinner said. “There are still goals to achieve in the rest of the season. I want to keep improving.”
