The overview. The CEO’s plan was based on three pillars:
- Global connectivity.
- Artificial intelligence.
- Virtual/augmented reality.
Today, Meta is leading or significantly promoting these three areas.
In detail:
- Connectivity: Although its drone plan did not work, Meta has invested in terrestrial solutions, such as fiber optic infrastructure.
- AI: already in 2016, reasoning and the ability to plan were considered. Today Meta is one of the leaders in natural language processing and computer vision.
- Virtual/augmented reality: the Reality Labs division continues to innovate, both with the Quest line and with the Ray-Ban Meta and the recently shown Orion.
What has happened. In these eight years, Meta has…
- Connected to billions of people through Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
- Developed open source AI (with nuances) and top level.
- Led innovation in virtual and augmented reality.
And now what. With two years left until the horizon of his original plan, Zuckerberg seems determined to fulfill one of his asterisks, the Metaverse, in addition to consolidating Meta in the rest of the areas.
Its success is based on a long-term vision that time has shown to be coherent, a willingness to take risks and invest the company’s resources, and the promotion of innovation over conformity on conquered lands.
