WASHINGTON DC – The United States is working with its allies, including France, to achieve a ceasefire between Israel and the Lebanese Shiite group, whose escalation in recent weeks threatens to spark a full-scale war in the Middle East.
According to the White House, President Joe Biden met this Wednesday within the framework of the UN General Assembly with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, to talk about their efforts to “secure a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah and “avoid a broader war.”
In this regard, a senior US official confirmed to EFE that Washington is using its influence as a key ally of Israel in the Near East to promote negotiations.
“We are having active discussions with the Israelis, as well as other countries, to try to secure a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah,” said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The Lebanese Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, who is in New York for the UN Assembly, and the President of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri, are also participating in these negotiations, as the latter revealed in an interview with the electronic version of the newspaper.
