Finally, an emoji that represents us all is coming: an exhausted face with dark circles under its eyes.

This is one of eight new emojis coming to smartphones and computers next year, which also include a vegetable, a harp, a leafless tree, a shovel, a purple splatter and the flag of the remote Channel island of Sark .

Emojipedia, a popular emoji reference site, published sample images a few months ago. Recently, the Unicode Consortium, the nonprofit that oversees global emoji standards and new versions, approved the new line.

Smartphone users will be able to start using the new emojis on “a variety of digital devices in the coming months and throughout 2025,” according to Emojipedia .

The exhausted emoji face earned the title of “most anticipated emoji” at the World Emoji Awards, where it received over 60% of the votes. The splash and the shovel came in second and third place, respectively.

While these may seem a bit simple, the leafless tree is intended to raise awareness about drought and climate change, according to Brian Baihaki, who submitted it to the Unicode Consortium.

“Drought is a natural part of the climate cycle, and over millions of years trees have adapted to these harsh conditions,” Baihaki wrote. “But the climate is changing, with droughts becoming more frequent, more severe and even spreading to other places in a short time.”

Different operating services, such as Apple’s iOS and Alphabet’s Android, and companies are putting their own spins on emoji designs.

Interpretations can lead to controversy, such as Google’s mistake in placing foam on top of a half-full glass of beer or mixing up the ingredients (with cheese on the bottom) in its burger emoji. Both have since been corrected.
