First indigenous case of monkeypox confirmed in Argentina

The first indigenous case of monkeypox was reported in the San Isidro district, north of the Buenos Aires metropolitan area. A 22-year-old man showed symptoms of the disease. After tests carried out at the Malbran Foundation in the autonomous City of Buenos Aires, the presence of the infection was confirmed.

According to the official report, the man has no experience of traveling abroad and was quarantined at home until he responded well to treatment to heal the common skin lesions.

Thus, this is the first indigenous case of monkeypox since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the crisis a global one.

Monkeypox is a wild viral zoonosis caused by an infection belonging to the Orthopoxvirus family and is commonly found in central and western Africa.

The disease can be transmitted by contact with exhaled droplets and by contact with infected skin lesions (including the penis) or contaminated materials.

The incubation period can range from 5 to 21 days, while the most common side effects are fever, migraine, muscle pain, enlarged lymph nodes, Cold and tiredness, along with rashes.
