Artificial intelligence (AI) has many health benefits; for example, it helps to have more precise diagnoses, reduces medical errors, provides more time for doctor-patient interaction, which is very important for the patient to have a better evolution, explained Dr. Angela Tulipano, family doctor at the Dr. Miguel Cárdenas Barahona Polyclinic in Las Tablas.
He added: “AI helps in the training of health personnel, with a simulated space. Also, in surgical procedures, through robotics and visual intelligence, because it helps to have a better result at the time of surgery, it can interpret the diagnoses and help to give the treatments according to the person in front of us.”
With AI, specialties such as radiology will benefit from being able to obtain images much faster, which will reduce the processing time; and dermatology, which is quite visual, allows it to have an adequate diagnosis for the patient in a short time.
The aim of AI is to avoid errors that lead to inappropriate treatment and decision-making under pressure due to the accumulation of work, said Dr. Tulipano.
“It is a field that has not yet reached Panama. There are many courses, but in reality, the attention as such is not being given frequently. To the extent that we generate the data, which becomes a label, in Panama; to the extent that the algorithms are generated with all of them, we will have the necessary tools so that we all have access to artificial intelligence here in Panama,” he concluded.
