Epic Games Store bets on free mobile games to compete with Google Play Store

Google Play Store is the default application download platform for Android devices, but players are betting on alternatives that are beginning to gain weight. One of them is the Epic Games Store with such popular games as Fall Guys, Rocket League Sideswipe or Fortnite.

Epic launched this download platform for Android in August of this year with a download and update system very similar to the Play Store. The company intends to open itself to a broader audience and has changed its global strategy: a package of totally free games arrives for mobile.

Steve Allison, general director of the Epic Games Store, announced the changes to the download platform during the event Unreal Fest held in Seattle (United States). Epic is working on the program they have called “free games” for mobile devices that adds to the already existing desktop version.

These third-party games will be available in the fourth quarter of this year. Epic Games Store intends to take advantage of the Christmas campaign with a package of third-party applications. The company has not revealed any further details, but between 10 and 50 free applications are expected to arrive by then.

We are at a point where developing games is expensive. Margins are low and game companies are suffering. Apple and Google make more profits from most games than the developers themselves, without contributing anything in return. This has to change, said Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic.

The company behind Fortnite continues working on the best way to make free games profitable, so the launch of some of them could be extended for a few more months. One of the most anticipated arrivals will be Ark: Ultimate Mobile Edition, scheduled for the end of this year.

Epic has experienced some openness in recent months, but nothing compared to the news it is working on. Epic Games Store will put more facilities than ever for developers to publish their games on the platform without the need for any interaction with the company.

These developments will not arrive until the first half of 2025, possibly at the beginning of January. Added to this are the arrival of more functions to interact with other users throughout the store such as in-game chats and the cross-platform gaming option. Epic has not revealed the schedule for these features, so they will arrive sometime next year.
