Walz attends Michigan-Minnesota college football game before debate with Vance

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) Tim Walz’s dual role as Minnesota governor and running mate to Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris was on display Saturday when he attended an event with college football fans from the University of Michigan and then went to the field to meet with the coach of the University of Minnesota.

Walz visited Ann Arbor to watch the University of Michigan and Minnesota teams play in what is scheduled to be his last major campaign appearance before Tuesday’s vice presidential debate.

Hours earlier, Walz was greeted at the airport by students from the University of Michigan, who had arrived on a bus with a banner reading Kill me the team, coach! The University of Michigan team won the game against Walz, who has drawn on his experience as a football coach and teacher during his election campaign, in which Democrats have tried to arouse the enthusiasm of young voters, and He has recently visited several university campuses.

The visit comes ahead of Tuesday’s debate between Walz and Donald Trump’s running mate, Republican Sen. JD Vance. After Saturday’s game, Walz will travel to northern Michigan to finish preparing before the debate, according to a person familiar with his plans who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private preparations.

Harris, for her part, held a fundraiser in San Francisco on Saturday, telling a crowd full of raucous supporters that there is a lot at stake in this election, while talking about a statewide abortion ban and of the decision of the federal Supreme Court to grant broad immunity to presidents.

“I am convinced,” she said. The American people are convinced that it is time to turn the page.

Harris added that the American people were ready for optimistic leadership and that is why her supporters, including Republicans like Dick Cheney, are supporting our campaign because they want an American president who works for all the American people.

Trump held a rally Saturday in Wisconsin, and was also headed to attend a college football game, the prime-time game between Georgia and Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Harris’ campaign team launched a new ad alluding to the possibility of holding a second presidential debate, which will be broadcast during the game and puts Trump in trouble. Harris has said she will debate again while Trump has ruled out that possibility.
