MIAMI (AP) Hurricane Isaac had strengthened into a Category 2 storm far from land in the northern Atlantic Ocean on Saturday, while Tropical Storm Joyce continued its path over open waters far east of the Caribbean.

Isaac had maximum sustained winds of 155 kilometers per hour (100 miles per hour) and was about 1,040 kilometers (645 miles) west-northwest of the Azores archipelago, west of Portugal. It was moving northeast at 30 km/h (18 mph), reported the National Hurricane Center (NHC), based in Miami.

In the far south, Joyce had maximum sustained winds of 75 km/h (45 mph), and was centered about 1,735 kilometers (1,080 miles) east of the northern Windward Islands, located in the far eastern Caribbean. It was heading west-northwest at 15 km/h (9 mph), the NHC reported.

Neither storm posed a threat to land, according to forecasters, and both were forecast to weaken in the coming days.
