TO YOUR HEALTH, recognized by the Spanish Society of Hematology and Hemotherapy

The article “Ever closer to a cure for thalassemia”, published by journalist Raquel Bonilla in the supplement TO YOUR HEALTH FROM REASON has been recognized with the Special mention during the VI edition of the HematoAvanza Journalism Awardpromoted by the Spanish Society of Hematology and Hemotherapy (SEHH), with the support of AbbVie, BeiGene, Gilead, Lilly and Novartis.

The HematoAvanza initiative, launched by the Spanish Society of Hematology and Hemotherapy (SEHH) eight years ago, promotes among all its activities the debate and learning among journalists, disseminators and professionals of hematology, in order to communicate the latest advances in the specialty. Within the framework of this initiative, the I HematoAvanza Meeting of Journalists and Disseminators was held in Madrid, where more than a hundred information and dissemination professionals met to toast the Present and future of one of the medical specialties that is advancing the most in recent years.

This meeting also hosted the awards ceremony for the 6th HematoAvanza Journalism Award, which for six editions has recognized the work of the media and information professionals in relation to the dissemination of the practice of hematology. M Victoria Mateospresident of the SEHH, thanked journalists and communicators during the meeting, insisting that at the SEHH we want all advances in the management of blood diseases and disorders to reach the population in the best possible way. There is no organ more transversal than blood, and this has been confirmed by the great variety of works presented in the VI Journalism Award.

El Pas, El Mundo and La Razn published the three articles shortlisted for the award. The winning works were: Hemophilia: a therapeutic revolution underway to ‘dethrone’ the disease of kings, by Oriol Gel, El Pas; The painful wait of Maria and 1,800 other Spaniards for the first CRISPR drug, by Cristina Garcia Lucio, El Mundo; and Ever closer to a cure for Thalassemia, by LA RAZN.

Beatriz Domnguez Gil, Director General of the National Transplant Organization (ONT) and President of the Journalism Award jury, thanked journalists and communicators during the awards ceremony for the essential work they do. It is vital to communicate scientific advances well, especially in areas as sensitive as hematology, so rigor and veracity are essential tools. Having specialized professionals like those we have in our sector is a guarantee that society is correctly informed, he said.
