A 3.4 magnitude earthquake struck the Malibu area early Friday morning

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a magnitude 3.4 earthquake was reported near Malibu at 4:56 a.m. today.

According to the USGS, the quake struck at 4:56 a.m. and was centered about 3.2 miles northwest of Malibu and 5.4 miles southwest of Agoura Hills. Its depth was about 6 miles.

No damage or injuries have been reported.

The quake follows another tremor felt in the Malibu area that caused shaking Thursday morning in parts of Southern California.

The quake’s initial magnitude of 5.1 was quickly reduced to 4.7. Quakes with magnitudes of 2.8, 2.4, 1.8, 1.5 and 2.1 followed, and more shaking is possible in the coming hours and days.

The 7:28 a.m. quake, which was centered just north of Malibu, was recorded at a depth of about seven miles in Malibu, Hermosa Beach, La Mirada, Anaheim, Santa Monica, the Hollywood Hills and parts of the San Fernando Valley.

Southern California has felt shaking from several earthquakes in recent weeks, including a magnitude 5.2 quake south of Bakersfield.

“We are experiencing shaking, but none of it has been damaging; it’s all been small,” said seismologist Lucy Jones. “This is a great reminder that the quiet of the last two decades is not our long-term vision.”
